According to Ghana News Agency:Helping Physicians and Patients Breathe Easier’. The World Health Organisation classifies air pollution as a leading environmental risk factor for disease and premature death.
In Ghana, rising air pollution levels due to vehicular emissions, industrial activities, waste burning, and household biomass use have led to an increase in respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and interstitial lung disease. Air quality in urban centers like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi frequently surpasses WHO safety limits, exacerbating health issues for vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, and placing additional strain on the country’s healthcare system.
The statement highlighted the need for investment in the training and specialization of radiologists in pulmonary imaging, suggesting partnerships between academic institutions, teaching hospitals, and international collaborators to enhance radiologists’ expertise in detecting and managing respiratory diseases. It also urged the government and development partners to allocate resources for the procurement and maintenance of advanced imaging equipment.
The communiqu© encouraged research into the connections between air quality and respiratory diseases, assessment of imaging modalities’ effectiveness, and the development of data-driven solutions for strengthening the health system. Chief Superintendent Dr. Francis Ofei, the newly elected President of GAR, committed to a consultative and inclusive leadership approach, highlighting the power of collective advocacy and the importance of building robust networks.
Dr. Ofei emphasized the need to champion continuing education, research, collaboration, and strategic development of radiology services nationwide to ensure equity and excellence. He called on senior colleagues to mentor young radiologists, support residents, and fortify partnerships with local and international stakeholders to advance the profession. “Together, we will continue to elevate the standards of our practice, improve patient care, and make a lasting impact,” he stated.
