Farmer Sentenced to Three Years for Incest with Biological Sister

Hohoe: A 34-year-old farmer, Daniel Dziwornu, has been sentenced by the Hohoe Circuit Court to three years imprisonment for engaging in sexual intercourse with his 21-year-old biological sister over a period spanning from 2020 to 2024. Despite pleading guilty and attributing his actions to the influence of alcohol, the court ruled that his explanation did not absolve him of responsibility for the crime.

According to Ghana News Agency, Chief Inspector Charles Aziati, the prosecutor, described Dziwornu’s actions as ‘barbaric, unacceptable, and deviant’ against cultural and ethical norms. Aziati urged the court to impose a severe penalty to serve as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar actions.

The court heard that the victim, who was unemployed, lived in the same town as the complainant, a social worker. The convict, who was a farmer, had assumed responsibility for his sister’s care following the death of their mother when the victim was very young. The siblings shared a residence until the victim moved out in March 2025 to live with her boyfriend, taking her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter with her.

Chief Inspector Aziati revealed that from 2020 to 2024, Dziwornu had engaged in sexual activities with his sister, which resulted in the termination of three pregnancies. Following the victim’s move, Dziwornu tracked her to her boyfriend’s house and forcibly took her daughter away.

The victim confided in her neighbor, who helped her file a complaint with the police. On May 17, 2025, Dziwornu was apprehended in possession of the child’s daughter while en route to Aflao and was subsequently handed over to the Hohoe Police. During the investigation, he admitted to having sexual relations with his sister.
