Erosion Severely Disrupts Avenue Lalou in Kinshasa

Kinshasa : An erosion has developed over several weeks on Avenue Lalou in the Binza Delvaux neighborhood, Ngaliema commune, Kinshasa, severing the main exit route to Matadi road. The situation is challenging for several households in the Delvaux neighborhood. Homes have been completely destroyed, and electrical cables have been swallowed by the ravine.

According to Radio Okapi, the erosion has also caused the rupture of REGIDESO piping, depriving numerous families of drinking water. Residents fear a rise in waterborne diseases due to this lack of access to potable water. “One now has to travel long distances to fetch water,” complained a resident.

Because of this erosion, moving from one point to another has become a significant challenge for many people, especially students living in this part of the capital. Road users are now resorting to small improvised tunnels around the ravine.

A visit on Tuesday, May 6, by a government delegation led by Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani brought some comfort to these families, but they are awaiting more concrete actions to improve their situation. The government assures, however, that backfilling work will commence in the coming days.
