Effia-Kwesimintsim: The Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) in the Western Region has initiated a significant project to desilt major storm drains in anticipation of the peak rainy season. This strategic move aims to mitigate flooding issues by ensuring that the gutters are clean, allowing for the unobstructed flow of water throughout the Municipality.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Abdul-Majeed Dokurgu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of EKMA, emphasized the importance of this initiative during an inspection of the ongoing work. He highlighted that desilting the clogged drains is vital in reducing flood incidents during heavy rains. Some drains have been neglected for over a decade, leading residents to forget their existence. The Assembly is committed to facilitating water flow by maintaining clean gutters.
Mr. Dokurgu expressed satisfaction with the progress made and voiced confidence that the desilting efforts would alleviate flooding in the Municipality. The MCE also revealed that comprehensive plans are underway to improve the entire drainage system. “In the meantime, we are working on seven major drains as a first step,” he stated, aiming to lessen the impact of flooding on lives and properties.
He urged residents to refrain from disposing of waste in the gutters, as such practices counteract the Assembly’s efforts to create flood-free communities. The MCE warned that the Assembly would strictly enforce sanitation by-laws, holding violators accountable.
The initiative has been well-received by residents, who expressed gratitude for the intervention. Mr. Collins Ofori, a resident of Effia, praised the Assembly’s efforts, noting that the desilting would provide much-needed relief during the rainy season. Having lived in the area for 20 years, he acknowledged the challenges posed by floods and thanked the MCE and his team for their proactive measures.
