Accra: Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Tom N¸rring, has urged Ghana to rise to its full potential by deepening transparency, strengthening accountability, and committing to bold, visionary leadership. Speaking at a diplomatic reception in Accra to mark the 176th anniversary of Denmark’s Constitution, Amb. N¸rring said while Ghana was endowed with abundant natural resources, fertile land, and a vibrant, youthful population, much of its promise remained unrealized due to persistent governance challenges.
According to Ghana News Agency, Ambassador N¸rring described his experience in Ghana as profound, referring to the country as “the land of gold and honey.” He acknowledged the country’s natural wealth and youth potential but expressed concern over the untapped opportunities and the concentration of wealth among a privileged few. During his tenure, Denmark has enhanced its relationship with Ghana through various initiatives focusing on climate action, maritime cooperation, water and sanitation, and regional security.
The Ambassador emphasized that Ghana’s national transformation hinges on addressing systemic issues like corruption and weak accountability structures. He commended the new government for its recent initiatives to improve transparency and public accountability, noting that these painful yet necessary steps could foster trust between leaders and citizens. He expressed hope that Ghana’s current and future leaders will demonstrate the vision and courage needed to unlock the nation’s potential.
Amb. N¸rring also highlighted the importance of equal international partnerships and praised Ghana’s alignment with democratic values. He called for strengthened cooperation to tackle regional and global challenges. Mr. John Dumelo, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, echoed the Ambassador’s sentiments, lauding Denmark for its commitment to development through capacity building and equal partnerships. He highlighted the donation of a full-mission bridge simulator to the Ghana Navy as a testament to Denmark’s support.
On behalf of President John Mahama and the people of Ghana, Mr. Dumelo expressed gratitude to Ambassador N¸rring for his service, acknowledging his legacy of integrity, friendship, and effective diplomacy.
