CS Wandayi Unveils Sh5 Million ICT Lab in Nyando

Nairobi: Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Foundation has handed over a state-of-the-art ICT lab at Ong’eche Secondary School in Kadibo Sub-County, Kisumu County. The initiative is part of KPC Foundation’s campaign to equip learners in underserved communities with the essential equipment to enhance digital skills development. The modern computer lab is replete with computers, internet access and solar panels built for Sh5 million as part of KPC Foundation Corporate Social Investment initiatives in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, Energy Cabinet Secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, while presiding over the official launch, lauded the initiative as a transformative step towards enhancing educational outcomes for students in rural setups. ‘I am pleased to note that the computer laboratory at Ong’eche Secondary School is already making an impact by serving junior secondary students from neighbouring schools, further extending the reach of this facility. It has led to increased student enrolment and is opening doors to modern learning opportunities,’ Wandayi said.

He announced that the milestone has promoted ICT literacy that is vital in today’s digital economy, and already students at Ong’eche Secondary have registered to sit for computer studies examinations in 2026 for the first time. The CS further noted, ‘This noble project is a game changer for the region. For the first time, students of this school will have an opportunity to train in computer science, and be equipped to compete favorably with learners from the rest of the country.’

Zilpa Abong’o, the Strategy and Compliance manager at KPC, who represented the Managing Director, Joe Sang at the occasion, emphasized that equipping students and teachers with modern digital learning tools aims to nurture the next generation of innovators. ‘The president has a very ambitious goal for ensuring that Kenya is the digital hub for the region. And we anticipate that even children from a village like this will be able to grow up to be tech innovators and contributors and entrepreneurs to the global economy,’ Abong’o stated.

The Foundation, she noted, has supported education programs with infrastructure development worth Sh.580 million nationwide in the past 8 years. Apart from the new computer laboratory at Ong’eche Secondary, the Foundation has also launched a block with twin laboratories and a classroom at Dr. Ida Odinga Girls Secondary School and a new school bus for Rangala Boys Secondary School in Siaya County worth a combined investment of Sh20.7 million in the 2024/25 Financial Year.
