Accra: An Accra Circuit Court has remanded an 18-year-old male into police custody over alleged theft of electrical gadgets valued GHC26,500.00. Philip pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and stealing of mobile phones, a laptop computer, and a PlayStation Portable ‘PSP,’ among others. He was convicted on his own plea, but sentencing was deferred.
According to Ghana News Agency, on May 26, 2025, Philip, now a convict, informed the court that since his remand, he had not been contacted to assist in the investigation. Consequently, the court instructed that he be taken to the dishonest receivers to recover the sold items which were stolen. He is expected to return to court on June 11, 2025. Meanwhile, his alleged accomplices, ‘Burn Them’ and ‘Saasa,’ remain at large.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackom earlier informed the court, presided over by Mr. Bright Samuel Acquah, that Mr. John Acquah, the complainant, was a businessman and Philip, the convict, served as an errand boy for him. Both the complainant and the convict resided in the same neighborhood at West Trassaco in Accra.
On April 17, 2025, the complainant returned home to discover that his house had been broken into and his personal belongings, including an iPhone XS mobile phone, an HP Envy laptop, an iPad, and three T-shirts, all valued at GHC20,000.00, had been stolen. Subsequently, on April 23, 2025, he spotted Philip wearing one of the stolen shirts and promptly alerted the police, leading to Philip’s arrest.
The prosecution stated that during the investigation, Philip admitted to the offense and informed the police that he had stolen the complainant’s spare key on the day of the theft and made away with his belongings. The court was told that Philip confessed to selling the items to various buyers at Madina Zongo Junction for GHC1,100.00. The police acted swiftly and were able to recover the complainant’s iPhone XS mobile phone, iPad, and the three shirts.
Philip was released on police enquiry bail to report at a later date to assist in the investigation. However, on May 4, 2025, he re-entered the complainant’s apartment and stole his PlayStation Portable (PSP) gaming machine valued at GHC6,500.00. He was arrested again on May 5, 2025, and brought to the unit for investigation. The prosecution revealed that Philip admitted to this offense as well, explaining how he executed the theft and naming ‘Burn Them’ and ‘Saasa’ as the receivers of the stolen items.
Philip was charged with the offense and brought before the court. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspects at large, according to the police.
