Community Encouraged to Support Reintegration of Former Prisoners

Busia: Religious leaders of BBMI Christian ministry in Busia County have called upon the community to be much more involved in the reintegration of former inmates into society. Speaking during a special Easter prayer and donation event at Korinda Prison, Busia, the clergy emphasized acceptance, forgiveness, and second chances for ex-prisoners who have portrayed a genuine turnaround in their lives.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative was led by Pastors Shadrack Oparanya, Michael Ouor, Robbert Lusweti, Simon Namayi, and Rose Namayi. They urged the government to consider pardoning inmates convicted of minor offences, especially those who have shown a notable change in their behaviour. “Easter reminds us that no one is beyond redemption. We therefore urge the government to extend the spirit of forgiveness to those who have made a genuine change in their behaviour,” stated Pastor Shadrack Oparanya.

The leaders noted that early release during Easter would promote Christian values of forgiveness and new beginnings. “We are not just preaching it in churches; let us live it by giving these people a second chance,” added Pastor Michael Ouor. The event, organized in collaboration with a community-based organization, DADY AND MAMY, brought together inmates, prison staff, and members of the Christian ministry for a day of worship, prayers, and donations of necessary supplies.

The inmates received foodstuffs and basic necessities aimed at making the Easter celebrations significant within the prison walls. Moreover, the pastors condemned the stigma that mostly awaited former inmates as they got back into society, noting that societal rejection and isolation usually drove such individuals back into crime. “The society must be the bridge, not the barrier, to a new life,” emphasized Pastor Robbert Lusweti.

Prison officers commended this initiative, saying it brought not only material support to inmates but also spiritual encouragement. They further noted that such engagements restored hope among inmates and reaffirmed their value as members of the community. Inmates appreciated the event and urged the organizers to arrange for more such activities because of their contribution to good mental health and successful reintegration into society.

The prison officers, together with the pastors, are urging society to receive the ex-inmates with an attitude of love, reminding the community that real rehabilitation does not practically take place until the individual is given a chance to rebuild their lives without stigma.
