Civil society in Tchiomia, Djugu territory (Ituri) called on Friday, September 20, for the strengthening of MONUSCO’s presence in this part of the DRC.

The organization made the appeal during an exchange with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix.

According to members of this civic organization, security has still not been fully restored in this area, and civilians remain under threat.

Women from Tchiomia, for their part, pleaded for their better protection by the UN mission.

They denounce the rapes they are victims of at the hands of armed men when they go to their fields.

They are asking that additional measures be taken for their safety.

For his part, Jean-Pierre Lacroix visited a quick impact project, financed by MONUSCO, with a view to creating employment opportunities for unemployed young people.

The latter are often recruited by armed groups, due to the lack of jobs.
