Niamey: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern over the recent attacks in Niger, particularly the assault on the Hamani Diori International Airport in Niamey during the night of January 28-29, 2026, and the deadly attack on January 18, 2026, in the village of Bosiye, which resulted in the deaths of approximately thirty civilians.
According to African Press Organization, the Chairperson condemned these acts of violence, which are part of a broader campaign by extremist groups targeting civilians and infrastructure. He praised the prompt response of Nigerien security forces, which helped contain the airport attack.
The Chairperson extended the African Union's solidarity to the people of Niger, offering condolences to the victims' families and the Nigerien government. He acknowledged the efforts of Niger's authorities and the Nigerien Armed Forces in combating extremism, highlighting the successful operations in the Tillab©ri region that disrupted terrorist activities.
He emphasized that terrorism and extremism threaten the peace and stability of affected states and reaffirmed the African Union Commission's commitment to supporting Nigerien efforts in collaboration with regional states and partners to combat these threats, protect civilians, and uphold state sovereignty and integrity.
