Chairman of Liberian Telecommunications Authority Engages in Talks with ECOWAS Commission President

Abuja: The Chairman of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, Clarence Massaquoi, recently met with Dr Omar Alieu Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, in Abuja, Nigeria. The meeting aimed to discuss reforms and development in Liberia's digital sector and to bolster regional cooperation in telecommunications.

According to African Press Organization, Massaquoi articulated his ambition to harmonize telecommunications policies by 2026 to attract more investment in infrastructure, lower communication service costs, and advance regional digital transformation. The discussions delved into harmonizing regulatory frameworks, enhancing digital infrastructure, and fostering a more cohesive regional telecommunications market.

Dr Omar Alieu Touray emphasized the strategic role of regulators in implementing regional policies and reiterated the ECOWAS Commission's commitment to supporting initiatives that improve access to telecommunications services for West African populations. He stressed the importance of regional integration in infrastructure and telecommunications for all ECOWAS member states.

Clarence Massaquoi expressed his readiness to enhance collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission to promote regulation aligned with regional market realities. Additional topics discussed included roaming within the community, the ECOWAS common currency, and agreements to facilitate the free movement of people and goods. Massaquoi also extended his gratitude to Dr Omar Alieu Touray for his efforts towards economic development and integration in West Africa.

Dr Omar Alieu Touray highlighted the need for unity and solidarity among ECOWAS member states, emphasizing that effective communication is crucial for successful integration. "We remain a community, a family. Despite the challenges, integration cannot succeed without effective communication between West African states," he stated.
