Asante-Akim South MCE Leads Operation Against Illegal Mining Activities

Asante-Akim South: Maame Sarfoah Appiah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asante Akim South, has led an operation to raid an illegal mining (galamsey) site as part of intensified efforts to combat environmental degradation in the municipality. The operation, conducted in collaboration with local security agencies and the municipal anti-galamsey task force, resulted in the seizure of mining equipment believed to have been used in the unlawful activity.

According to Ghana News Agency, the raid underscored the Assembly’s renewed commitment to protecting the environment, especially water bodies and forest reserves that have come under threat due to illegal mining. Addressing the media after the operation, the MCE reiterated the Assembly’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining. She emphasized that the activities of galamsey operators pose a risk to the health, safety, and economic well-being of residents.

The MCE expressed her determination to rid the municipality of illegal mining operations, highlighting that such activities not only destroy the environment but also endanger the future of the youth and the sustainability of natural resources. She further cautioned that similar enforcement actions would be carried out in other parts of the municipality, stressing that the Assembly would not relent in its efforts until the menace of galamsey was eradicated.

According to her, the operation was part of a broader national strategy by the government to strengthen the enforcement of mining regulations, preserve ecological systems, and ensure that Ghana’s natural resources were exploited in a responsible and sustainable manner.
