Apremdoman Lays Chiefs Mother to Rest

The Ebiradze Royal family of Apremdo, the traditional council, indigenes of the area, and well-wishers have paid their last respects to the late Nana Afrah, mother of Apremdohene, Nana Egya Kwamina XI, and Dr. Mark Eghan of AFDB Abidjan/AIIB China. The traditional funeral, interspersed with culture, traditions, and displays, saw many well-wishers and sympathizers traveling far and near to support the Chief and his elders in giving the mother of the land a significant step towards the world beyond.

According to Ghana News Agency, the funeral started on Tuesday, the 4th of November, and went through a series of Ahanta traditions and customs, concluding on Sunday, the 9th of November 2025. Foreign dignitaries who commiserated with Apremdohene and the council on their loss included Dr. Robert Fagans, Former Minister of Agriculture, Republic of Liberia, Dr. Patrick Agboma, Executive Director, Africa Projects Development Centre, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Callistus Agbaam of the World Bank, Washington DC, and Mr. Fomba Wai from the African Development Bank, Sierra Leone.

The event was also attended by Mr. Daniel Osei Boakye, Principal Procurement Officer, AfDB Senegal, staff and management from African Development Bank, Abidjan, Cote DIvoire, Mr. Oscar Anaanumba from the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development, and Mr. Joseph Amoah, Ashanti Region Chairman, United Party Plus. Nana Kobina Nketsia V, Paramount Chief of Essikado Traditional Area and President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, attended alongside other prominent chiefs, including Nana Kwesi Agyemang IX, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove Traditional Area, and Awulae Attibrukusu III, Paramount Chief of Lower Dixcove Traditional Area.

Representatives from the political sphere included the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Joseph Nelson, Majeed Nassam Dokurgu MCE Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly, Lawyer Fiifi Buckman MP for Kwesimintsim constituency, Mr. Yaw Boamah MP for Effia, Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah MP for Takoradi, Mr. Joe Baidoo Ansah, former MP for Kwesimintsim constituency and former Trade Minister, and Mr. Mireku Duker, former lands and Natural Resource Minister.

The late Obaapanyin Nana Afra, who lost her own mother at age six and was raised by her paternal uncle after her fathers death in a car crash, completed her middle school education in Tarkwa before relocating to Apremdo. Her dedication to education led her to establish the first KG in Apremdo in 1975, which was later adopted by the Ghana Education Service, making her the first pupil teacher on the government payroll. Nana Afra was known for her commitment to community work and her role in grooming many youths in the Apremdo community and beyond.

Nana Afra retired from active service in 2007 and supported many development initiatives led by Nana Egya Kwamina XI, her son and Chief of Apremdo. She is remembered for her contributions to women empowerment, societal growth, and investment in girls education. She is survived by five children and many grandchildren.
