Accra: The Alliance for Just Green Climate Innovations (AJGCI) has called on governments, businesses, and individuals to take bold, collective action to end plastic pollution: The call coincides with the 2025 World Environment Day, observed globally under the theme: ‘Putting an End to Plastic Pollution.’
According to Ghana News Agency, in a statement to mark the day, Mrs. Angelina Ama Tutau Mensah, Executive Director of AJGCI, described plastic pollution as one of the most pervasive environmental threats, with grave consequences for ecosystems, human health, and vulnerable communities. “It disturbs ecosystems, threatens wildlife, and imperils human health, often affecting our most vulnerable communities first and hardest,” the statement noted.
The organisation urged Ghanaians and the international community to embrace the moment not merely as a call to action, but as a promise for transformative change through science, innovation, and justice-based policy. It stressed the need for a holistic approach to tackling plastic waste, including rethinking how society produces, uses, and disposes of plastics.
This approach involves investing in biodegradable materials, redesigning products, and strengthening recycling systems that benefit both people and the planet. “Let this day mark a turning point where we move from awareness to bold, compassionate action,” the statement said. “Together, with empathy and determination, we can put an end to plastic pollution and build a world where nature and communities thrive, side by side.”
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting community-led innovations, championing policy reform, and empowering young people and frontline voices disproportionately affected by environmental harm. World Environment Day, established by the United Nations and observed annually on June 5, is the largest global platform for environmental advocacy. This year’s event focuses on raising awareness and mobilising action against plastic pollution, one of the planet’s most urgent environmental challenges.
