Adaklu Drivers Defy Mother Union Directive on Fare Reduction

Accra: Drivers in the Adaklu district continue to charge passengers the old fares, defying a directive from the leadership of the country’s driver unions. The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) had directed all commercial drivers nationwide to reduce fares by 15 percent, effective May 24, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, a survey conducted on a busy market day at Ho Central Market revealed that drivers were not complying with the directive, despite complaints from passengers. Drivers cited that running a transport business involves more than just fuel and lubricants, as costs for tyres, spare parts, and taxes remain unchanged.

The drivers suggested that the government consider reducing the Vehicle Income Tax, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority charges, and levies imposed by Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies. They stated that they would not reduce fares until they received an official notice from their leaders in Ho.

A passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, urged the District Chief Executive and other stakeholders to address the issue. Mr. Mark Dodzi Hoenyekor, Presiding Member of the Adaklu District Assembly and Assemblyman for Helekpe Electoral Area, noted that they plan to engage with the drivers’ leadership to resolve the matter.
