Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center to Establish Headquarters in Addis Ababa

A delegation from the Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center based in London has arrived in Addis Ababa with the view of establishing a headquarters that cherishes Pan-African values, Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Meles Alem said.

In his biweekly briefing, the spokesperson told journalists a group of scholars, writers, historians, and black rights activists are in Ethiopia in a historic move to launch headquarters of the Global Black History, Heritage and Education Center in Addis Ababa.

Meles noted that the institution is interested in making Ethiopia a center of Pan-Africanism movement.

During their stay in Ethiopia members of the delegation will meet various government officials and hold discussions in different places.

“This institution wants to open its headquarters in Ethiopia. There are a number of factors that international institutions like this consider when opening their headquarters. The decision and the visit have considered the contribution of Ethiopia to Africa and the freedom of the black people in general,” he stated.

Responding to a question regarding the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the spokesperson said the construction of the dam will not affect any riparian countries. Sudanese and Egyptian brothers and sisters know this very well.

According to him, the dam has multiple benefits not only for Ethiopia but also for the riparian countries; and Ethiopia is working to solve differences through negotiations under the auspices of the African Union.

With respect to the more than 100,000 Somali refugees that entered Ethiopia, Meles said this is normal as Ethiopians too go to neighboring countries when faced with trouble.

The Government of Ethiopian has therefore been working with international organizations to provide support for the refugees from Somaliland.

The spokesperson noted that Ethiopia has a record history of hosting refugees. So we provide our generous support for them from our limited resources.
