1,200 Kiambu Youth Gain Practical Career Skills at Ndumberi Stadium

Kiambu: At least 1,200 youth in Kiambu County have successfully completed a skills training programme aimed at enhancing their employability and self-reliance amidst the dynamic challenges of the Kenyan job market. The graduation ceremony, held at Ndumberi Stadium over the weekend, celebrated the accomplishments of these young individuals who participated in various short courses.

According to Kenya News Agency, the training initiative was a collaborative effort between the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) – Kiambu Chapter and the Kiambu County Government’s Department of Youth Affairs. Chief Officer for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication, Godfrey Masolo, who served as the guest of honour, lauded the programme for its significant role in equipping the youth with practical and marketable skills.

“This programme is an example of how partnerships can yield impactful results. Our youth are now more empowered and prepared to contribute meaningfully to society, either through employment or entrepreneurship,” stated Masolo during the event.

The training programme covered a range of courses including Sign Language, Theology, Catering, Plumbing, and Computer Skills. It specifically targeted unemployed youth, school leavers, and individuals seeking to acquire technical skills for the job market. Masolo encouraged the graduates to leverage their newly acquired skills to create opportunities for themselves and others, while also emphasizing the county government’s commitment to supporting youth-led development through policy and funding.

Among the graduates was Lucy Njeri, who completed a course in computer skills. She expressed her gratitude, noting that the programme had significantly impacted her life both personally and professionally. “I can now apply for jobs online and even assist others in navigating digital platforms. This training has transformed my life,” she said.

The International Youth Fellowship, which played a leading role in the training alongside the county government, reaffirmed its dedication to fostering youth development through mentorship and education. The ceremony witnessed attendance from youth leaders, trainers, parents, and local residents, with entertainment by the graduates and displays of their practical projects, underscoring the programme’s impact.

This skills training programme is part of a larger strategy by the Kiambu County Government to tackle youth unemployment, promote innovation, and support inclusive growth under the development slogan ‘Making Kiambu Great Again’.
