Winneba: The 29th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games has been officially launched, with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) now inaugurated. Prof. Victor Antwi, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has taken on the role of Chairman of the LOC for the 2026 Games.
According to Ghana News Agency, the 2026 GUSA Games will unite student-athletes from 16 public universities across Ghana, competing in a range of sports including Athletics, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Volleyball, and Handball. The event aims to not only celebrate sporting prowess but also promote unity among the universities involved.
Prof. Antwi, in his address, called on LOC members to commit fully to the successful planning of the games. He also appealed to all stakeholders to participate actively to make the 29th edition of the games the most impactful yet.
Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, conveyed the University’s pride in being chosen to host the upcoming games, reaffirming UEW’s dedication to delivering a successful event. He emphasized the transformative role of university sports in instilling values such as discipline and teamwork and announced plans to upgrade sports infrastructure to set new standards for university sports in Ghana.
Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, President of GUSA, expressed gratitude to UEW for accepting the role of host for the 2026 Games. He praised the University’s commitment to sports development and its initiatives to foster future national sports icons. Mr. Tanko also urged all stakeholders to work towards organizing an inspiring sporting event, highlighting the potential achievements from united efforts.
The launch event saw attendance from notable personalities, including Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Prof. Jonathan Ammah, Prof. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Prof. Mrs. Rebecca Akpanglo-Nartey, Dr. Mrs. Edinam Avoke, Dr. Theophilus Mensah, Mr. Bawa Fuseini, Dr. Timothy K. Mensah, Mrs. Emma Pimpong, Mr. Collins Awuku, and Mr. Nurudeen Ahmed.
The successful launch marks the start of extensive preparations for what promises to be an exceptional sporting event in 2026.
