Ministry Unveils Lucrative Investment Prospects in Booming Livestock Sector

Addis Ababa: Ethiopia’s livestock industry is being highlighted as a high-potential investment frontier, with vast opportunities for growth and profitability, according to Livestock and Fishery Resources Development (LFRD) at the Ministry of Agriculture. Tsigereda Fekadu, Lead Executive for LFRD at the Ministry, told ENA that the government is pushing forward major reforms to unlock the sector’s untapped potential.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, with one of the largest livestock populations in Africa, Ethiopia is positioning itself as a key player in animal husbandry and veterinary health services. Tsigereda noted that there are substantial opportunities, especially in the production and distribution of veterinary medicines and vaccines.

Ethiopia’s livestock sector currently contributes 26 percent to the agricultural GDP and plays a critical role in employment and livelihoods, particularly for farmers and pastoralist communities. The ministry has been implementing value-chain development initiatives, including feed production, breed improvement, and better transportation for livestock products to boost domestic and export potential.

Reforms are being rolled out to attract both local and foreign investors, focusing on easing challenges related to animal feed supply and enhancing veterinary infrastructure. Tsigereda pointed out that the veterinary sector remains significantly underdeveloped, especially in vaccine and medicine production, making it a prime area for investment.

To encourage investment, the government is offering incentives such as land access, tax holidays until profitability is achieved, and detailed implementation manuals on key areas like animal feed and veterinary health. Government policies are also being refined to enhance the quality of meat, milk, and hides, capitalizing on Ethiopia’s favorable climate and geographic diversity. Tsigereda affirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture is committed to supporting investors at every stage, ensuring long-term success and mutual benefit.
