Nyamira: Eight hundred and twenty-two jobless youths in Nyamira County will be recruited to benefit from the transformative climate work 2025 initiative, popularly dubbed Kazi Mtaani. Nyamira County commissioner Erastus Mbui, while launching the county technical implementation committee to supervise the implementation of the programme, confirmed that the government is committed to tackling joblessness among the youth in this country and cushioning them from dire economic vulnerability.
According to Kenya News Agency, Commissioner Mbui stated that the opportunity for jobless youths to work and earn is timely as many youths are struggling to survive and make ends meet through tough economic constraints, a crisis affecting many in the entire country. The programme aims to empower youths to earn a living while simultaneously improving the quality of roads and the environment through seedling tubings for tree planting, road beautification, and mitigating climate change effects.
The programme, which began in 2024 in Nairobi with a focus on cleaning the Nairobi River, is now officially rolling out across the entire country. Over 110,000 youths will be recruited, with priority given to works in roads and infrastructure, housing and urban development, and the environment. Commissioner Mbui explained that the roads and infrastructure sector will focus on repairing roads using labour-intensive methods, landscaping, greening highways and roadways, bush clearing, unclogging drainage, and street cleaning. Environmental work will involve seedling tubing, tree nursery development, and nurturing of grown trees, while the housing sector will engage employed youths in making Interlocking Soil Stabilized Blocks (ISSBs) and managing solid waste in marketplaces.
County Housing department director, Boaz Mireri, confirmed that officers from key technical departments involved in making the youth’s work-plan and mapping out priority areas have already been notified. They are part of the implementation committees to ensure the youths work diligently to give the county a clean, greener look.
Dr. Grace Nyamongo, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for infrastructure, roads, and public works, expressed optimism about the benefits the county will gain from the Climate Work programme and promised total cooperation and support to ensure the six-month programme is a success in Nyamira County.
Nyamira County will recruit 795 workers and 27 supervisors aged between 18 to 35 years. Workers will be paid Sh.500 per day, and supervisors will receive Sh.580 per day. Applications for all qualified youths are done online for selection and placement.
