Zenith Bank locks up 5-year partnership Agreement with WAEC


The Zenith Bank (Ghana) Ltd has signed a contract with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to sponsor the Overall Best WASSCE Candidate award for the next five years in demonstrating its commitment towards celebrating academic excellence.

Prior to the signing of the new agreement, which spans 2024 to 2028, the Bank sponsored the Overall Best WASSCE Candidate award for the years, 2020, 2021 and 2022, presenting each winner with a laptop and a cash prize of GHC30,000.

At the 2023 awards ceremony in Accra, Mr Henry Chinedu Onwuzurigbo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank (Ghana) Ltd, presented the Overall Best WASSCE Candidate, Mr Leonard Kofi Marton Amo-Kodieh, a former student of the St. James Seminary SHS in Sunyani, with a laptop and cash prize of GHS30,000 for his exceptional performance in the WASSCE for scoring straight ‘A1’s in all subjects.

Mr Amo-Kodieh who is currently studying Human Biology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), also re
ceived a plaque and desk top computer for his alma mater, St. James Seminary SHS in Sunyani.

The second Best WASSCE Candidate award went to Dzandu Selorm, a former student of the Labone Senior High School and currently studying Human at KNUST.

He also received a certificate, cash prize, a laptop as well as a plaque and desktop computer for his alma mater, Labone Senior High School in Accra.

Another former student of the St. James Seminary SHS in Sunyani, Daniel Asenso-Gyambibi, took the third Best WASSCE Candidate award receiving a cash prize, laptop, and certificate while his alma mater, St. James Seminary SHS in Sunyani also received a plaque and a desk top computer.

Mr. Onwuzurigbo said the sponsorship of the award forms part of Zenith Bank Ghana’s commitment of investing in education.

‘We believe in investing in the future leaders of the country by recognizing and rewarding academic excellence. This sponsorship reflects our dedication to supporting the educational achievements of young individuals, e
nsuring they have the encouragement and resources needed to succeed,’ he said.

He indicated that by recognising and rewarding academic excellence, the Bank believes it will not only encourage students to strive for greatness but also help build a brighter future for the country.

‘This sponsorship underscores the Bank’s mission of investing in the best people while fostering educational achievement, promoting lifelong learning, and supporting the aspirations of young scholars,’ he added.

Mrs. Wendy Addy-Lamptey, Head of the National Office of the West African Examinations Council, expressed WAEC’s appreciation for the Bank’s sponsorship of the Overall Best WASSCE Candidate award for a 5-year period, adding that all three candidates from Ghana also swept all the awards at the International Excellence Awards for WASSCE (SC) held in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister of Education, also congratulated the students for their exceptional performance in the WASSCE.

He highlighted gov
ernment’s investments in education at the secondary school level which had contributed significantly to improve WASSCE results over the years.

Meeting in Rabat on Preparations for 2024 General Population & Housing Census


Rabat – A meeting devoted to examining the preparations underway for the organization of the General Population and Housing Census (RGPH-2024) was held on Thursday at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, under the chairmanship of Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, and High Commissioner for Planning, Ahmed Lahlimi Alami.

This meeting is part of the implementation of the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI for the upcoming general census, as outlined in the letter sent by the Sovereign, may God assist Him, to the Head of Government on June 20th regarding the preparation for the general census scheduled throughout September of this year, according to a statement by the Ministry of the Interior.

It was an opportunity to review the High Royal Directives aimed at ensuring the rigorous organization of this major national event, given the important and multiple data and indicators it will provide on Moroccan society, which are of interest to national and international institutio
ns, political, social and economic players, civil society, Moroccan families and foreign communities residing in Morocco, the same source added.

The meeting was also an occasion to reiterate His Majesty the King’s firm commitment to ensuring the success of the next general census, which the Sovereign hopes will be innovative in terms of the approach and technological resources to be mobilized for data collection and processing, and ambitious in terms of the scope of the survey, which will be extended to include topical issues that enjoy the Royal High Solicitude, including the structuring societal project to generalize social protection.

In addition, the forthcoming general population and housing census will contribute to the achievement of the social project and the deployment of the development model, built on the principles of political democracy, economic efficiency, human development and social and territorial cohesion.

Based on the High Royal Orientations, all the measures to be implemented were exam
ined in order to promote the full success of this important national event, which requires, in addition to the overall mobilization of significant human and logistical resources, broad support and close and effective coordination on the part of all administrations, public establishments and deconcentrated services, in addition to regional, provincial and local authorities and communities, noted the Ministry of the Interior.

In this regard, emphasis was placed on the importance of effective coordination between the services of the Ministry of the Interior and the High Commission for Planning (HCP), as well as with all government departments in supporting all the preparatory and procedural stages of the general census, the statement added, underlining the essential role of walis and governors, alongside elected councils and the deconcentrated services of ministries, in terms of logistical and human support and in determining the manner of their contribution to carrying out the census.

With regard to the curre
nt state of preparations, the HCP is working to implement the necessary measures to mobilize human resources, through the completion of the selection process for the teams in charge of field missions relating to data collection from families, monitoring and supervision, as well as preparations for a training session to be held for members of these teams over the months of July and August, with a view to collecting and exploiting these data using the technological resources deployed by the HCP for the conduct of this large-scale national operation.

The meeting was also an opportunity to recall the contents of the Letter addressed by HM King Mohammed VI to the Head of Government, in which the Sovereign calls on citizens to demonstrate full cooperation and active participation in this exercise of general interest by providing reliable and accurate information, which will be used in drawing up public policies in line with the country’s interests and in keeping with the development projects and programs carried o
ut under the far-sighted guidance of His Majesty the King, the statement concluded.

HM the King Congratulates Djibouti’s President on Independence Day


Rabat – His Majesty King Mohammed VI sent a message of congratulations to the President of the Republic of Djibouti, Ismaël Omar Guelleh, on his country’s Independence Day.

In this message, the Sovereign expresses His warm congratulations and His best wishes for health and happiness to Guelleh and progress and prosperity to the Djiboutian people.

On this occasion, His Majesty the King reaffirms His pride in the bonds of brotherhood between the two Heads of State and the two countries, stressing His firm determination to continue working with the Djiboutian President to promote bilateral cooperation and raise it to the highest level for the two brotherly peoples and in the service of the African continent.

Cameroon ranks 17th in 23rd Senior African Athletics Championship


Cameroon’s performance in the 23rd edition of the Senior African Athletics Championship saw them finish in the 17th place on the classification table, with a total of 7 medals including 3 silvers and 4 bronze medals, an improvement from their performance in the previous edition, where they won 3 medals overall.

South Africa emerged overall champions with 19 medals (9 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze) followed by Nigeria and Ethiopia in second and third place respectively.

Notably, Cameroon’s silver medals were won by Emmanuel Esseme in the Men’s 100M race, Anne Suzanne in triple jump and Adele Mafongang in the Women’s Heptathlon.

The bronze medals were won by Emmanuel Esseme in the Men’s 200M, Nkwemy Raymond in the Triple Jump, Linda Angounou in the Women’s 400M Hurdles, and Véronique Kossendra in the Women’s Triple Jump event.

The next major event for Cameroonian athletes will be the Summer Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11 and some athletes like Adele Mafongang and Li
nda Angounou were able to grap a qualification ticket from the Athletic championship.

While the 23rd edition of the championship was hosted by Cameroon, it faced criticisms from several athletes who expressed dissatisfaction with the facilities, including transportation, equipment and others.

Looking ahead, the 24th edition of the Athletic Championship will be held at the University of Accra in Ghana in 2026, with Ghana winning the bid and securing 12 out of 15 votes against Botswana.

Breaking: former Cameroonian midfielder Landry Nguemo dies in road accident


Former defensive midfielder Landry Nguemo, has been reported dead in a road accident in the town of Obala in the Centre region.

The nature of the accident shows that there was poor overtaking which led to a collision, sources indicate. It is also revealed that he died alongside another occupant of the car he was traveling in.

Several messages have been posted online about the death of the player.

FECAFOOT President and former teammate, Samuel Eto’o, made a post on Instagram, expressing grief.

Nguemo, 38, joined the national team in 2006, and participated in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He retired from football in 2019 with 41 caps for the national team and three goals.

He had also played in several clubs in Europe, including French sides AS Nancy, Saint-Etienne, and Bordeaux, as well as other clubs in Turkey and Scotland. He equally got into coaching, and trained players in youth teams in France.

A native of Dschang in the West region where he started playing football, Nguemo moved to Yaounde when he r
eached his early teens, and later traveled to France to continue with his career.
