KINSHASA: The representative of UNESCO in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Isaias Barreto da Rosa, emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) can make a significant contribution to the work of journalists. He spoke during a workshop organized in Kinshasa by UNESCO and the Union Nationale de la Presse du Congo (UNPC), which was themed “Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and Media.”
According to Radio Okapi, participants discussed the impact of AI on press freedom and stressed the need to educate journalists so they can adapt to the challenges it brings. Isaias Barreto da Rosa highlighted that AI can play a key role in several aspects of journalistic work.
“Artificial intelligence can facilitate content preparation, data analysis, as well as several other essential activities for journalists. This workshop aims to strengthen the capabilities of Congolese journalists, enabling them to fully understand the potential of AI and use it effectively in their work,” he explained.
However, the UNESCO representative reminded that AI has a dual nature. “There is a good side, but also a bad side. This workshop not only allows us to seize the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence but also to better understand its risks, so that we can take the necessary measures to ensure quality journalism in the AI era,” he added.
This initiative is part of an effort to prepare Congolese journalists for the technological transformations that are influencing the production and dissemination of information.
